A few days after the bright festival of Diwali, the whole village started preparing for another sacred festival — Chhath Puja. Homes were cleaned, bamboo baskets were decorated, and the fragrance of traditional sweets filled the air.
In a small house, little Rohan was watching his mother in the kitchen. She was carefully preparing Thekua and Gujiya for the Chhath Puja offering. The smell of jaggery, wheat flour, and ghee spread throughout the house.
Rohan asked curiously,“Mother, why do you
make these sweets every year for Chhath Puja?”
His mother smiled and said,
“These sweets are not just food, my son. They are a symbol of love, devotion, and gratitude. During Chhath Puja, we offer them to the Sun God and pray for our family’s happiness and health.”
Rohan watched as his mother shaped each thekua with great care, as if she was filling it with her prayers and blessings. The gujiyas were golden and beautiful, just like the warmth of a mother’s heart.
In the evening, they went to the riverbank with the basket full of fruits, thekua, and gujiya. Hundreds of devotees were standing in the water, offering prayers to the setting sun. The atmosphere was peaceful and filled with devotion.
Rohan looked at his mother and said softly,
“Mother, today I understand that thekua and gujiya are not just sweets… they carry a mother’s love and prayers.”
His mother gently placed her hand on his head and smiled. At that moment, the rays of the setting sun touched the basket of prasad, as if blessing every sweet made with faith and love.
